CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Carol Downing, 90, of Charles City, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Friday where a scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary. Visitation will continue Saturday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Carol Downing, 90, of Charles City, died Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Carol Downing will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church. Reverend Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday where a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary. Visitation will continue Saturday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Carol Ruth Nehls Downing was born March 9, 1922, at Charles City, the daughter of Irving and Catherine "Bertha" (Wendt) Nehls. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1940. On July 12, 1943 she was united into marriage to James "Jim" Downing at the Immaculate Conception Rectory. Jim and Carol farmed all their lives near Charles City. Carol enjoyed doing needlework, was known as a "perfect" seamstress. Other interests included: music, playing the keyboard and violin, watching the Hawkeyes and Cubs, and traveling. For several years she volunteered at Jefferson Elementary School. Carol enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include eight children, Janet (Delbert) Pratt of Nashua, Bill (Mary) Downing of Charles City, Steve (Debra) Downing of Charles City, Gary (Pam) Downing of Nashua, Michael (Joyce) Downing of Charles City, Pauline (William) Bravener of Sumner, Cathy (Rob) Nordman of Arlington, Tex., and Roger (Laurie) Downing of Lake Mills; 21 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; a sister, Jean Moore of California; and three sisters-in-law, Annette Nehls of Morro Bay, Calif, Dorothy Letsch of Grimes and Joan Nixt of Greene.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on December 26, 2006; a great grandson, Gavin Bollman; two brothers, Robert Nehls and George Nehls; and a sister, Frances Scoles.
