James Cummings Wiley – November 12, 1811 – November 10, 1893

WILEY OBITUARY

At his home in this place November 11th, James C. Wiley aged 82 years.

James Cummings Wiley was the 5th son of George Wiley and was born at Putnam, New York, November 12th 1811.

He was first married November 15th 1832 to Elizabeth Corbett by whom he had 5 children Margaret, John, Alex, Wallace and Robert. The three first named serving their country well during the late war and who with the exception of John who died here all survive him.

His first wife died June 28, 1849 and on January 1, 1851 he married Caroline E. Cole who survives him. Three children Harriet, Marian and Lena were the fruit of this marriage who are all living.

Uncle Wiley moved to the West in 1869 and engaged in farming first living on the Walner place south of town. In 1878 he moved to town where he became known as one of the most generous and beloved of old men.

All loved and respected Uncle Wiley and his sturdy and faithful efforts to earn an honorable living long past the time most men are able to work commanded the respect of all.

He lived a long, good and useful life and laid himself down to rest at last worn out but beloved respected by all who ever knew him. The funeral services were conducted by Rev C E Taggart on Sunday afternoon last and a large number of our people turned out to pay their last tribute of respect to Uncle Wiley. May he rest in peace.

James C. Wiley died at Rockford, Iowa, on 10 November 1893. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. The burial permit lists the cause of his death as cancer and old age.
