Richard Reinhard “Dick” Pump – October 25, 1926 – December 20,2007

Richard Reinhard “Dick” Pump, 81, of 602 1st Ave. NW, Rockford, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, Iowa, of natural causes. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 24, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rockford, with Pastor Patricia Shaw officiating.

Dick was born Oct. 25, 1926 in Independence, Iowa to Otto and Anna (Barenthin) Pump, and grew up on the family farm in rural Jessup, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Jubilee Lutheran Church in rural Black Hawk County.

He attended school in Jubilee and graduated with the class of 1944 from Jessup High School.

He served in the United States Navy in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, on mine sweepers in the Pacific Ocean near Japan and near Alaska. He earned a Commendation for saving the life of a shipmate after their vessel sunk in the frigid waters near Alaska. He was a 61 year member of the Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 in Jesup. Both the legion hall and he are named after his uncle Reinhard Pump, who was killed in World War I.

He married Joan E. Terhune on Aug. 6, 1950 in Jessup, Iowa. Together, they had five children residing in Jessup, Iowa before moving to Rockford in 1968. Dick had a variety of careers, including owning a gas station and driving a tank wagon in Jessup, district seed corn sales manager and selling real estate in north Iowa. He was working for Hinz Real Estate in Charles City until his health prevented him from continuing.

He served the public in many different ways. He was a Jessup city councilman, Jessup Boy Scout volunteer, was president of the Shell Rock Valley Little League, was on the Zion Lutheran Church council, was an active member of the Cedar Valley Realtors, the Iowa and the National Association of Realtors, was on the Floyd County Compensation Board, reached the five gallon mark of blood donation, was a member of the Rockford Lions' Club, and was a Rockford Municipal Light Plant trustee.

He was a state champion bowler, an avid golfer who never tired of hitting the ball straight, and a sports fan, especially following the Hawkeyes. He rarely missed his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. Dick enjoyed a good joke, but he enjoyed a bad one even more.
He is survived by Joan, his wife of 57 years; five children and seven grandchildren: sons, Gary (Pam) of Washington, Iowa, and their three boys Tanner, Terry, and Lucas (McKessey); Larry (Sue) of Rockford, Iowa and their three children, Keith, Cody, and Staci; Rod of Clear Lake, and his son, Barry; Todd (Suzette) of Vancouver, Washington; and daughter, Marty of Peoria, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1938; his father in 1981; his stepmother, Frieda (Koob) in 1986; brother, Calvin Pump in 1986; and great-granddaughter Hannah Pump in 2006.
Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Rockford, was in charge of arrangements.
