Leland VanSickle – Ca. 1904 – July 10, 1928
Leland VanSickle, the young man murdered last Tuesday evening by Will Schmidt, was born in Illinois 24 years ago, and was the eldest of nine children.
When 15 years of age he came with his parents to Webster City, where they resided for five years, then moving to the Woller farm near Marble Rock, where they resided four years.
He died at the Ted Schmidt farm southwest of Marble Rock on Tuesday night, a victim of shots fired by William Schmidt, while temporarily insane.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church at Marble Rock, Friday afternoon at 12:30 o’clock, in charge of Rev. L. W. Inman, of Charles City.
Comforting selections were sung by Mrs. Lucy Moore and Mrs. Mary Barber, accompanied by Mrs. S. W. McNinch. There were many beautiful floral offerings from friends and societies, all anxious to bring comfort to the sorrowing family.
Relatives present were the grief-stricken parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles VanSickle, of Erskine, Minnesota, who arrived here Thursday; his brothers; Glenn, who works on the Herschel Handley farm; Henry and Allen,of Erskine; his uncles Fred VanSickle, of Orangeville, Illinois; and Raleigh Cleckler, also of Illinois.
Three brothers and two sisters remained at Erskine, where the VanSickles moved last spring.
Leland was a quiet, industrious, upright boy, liked and respected by all who knew him. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen Lodge of Marble Rock.
No words can express the situation better than those uttered by the heart-broken mother, when the coffin was closed upon her first born son. “It is terribly to think of – he was such a good boy.”
Following services the body was taken to Webster City for burial.Iowa Recorder, Wednesday July 18, 1928
