Obituary

Charles City, Iowa - Irene M. Ferch, 92, of Charles City, died September 30, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Brian Shepley will officiate. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be from 4:30 until 8 p.m., Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., and again one hour prior to services at the church. A Rosary will be at 4:45 p.m. and Scripture services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Irene Mary Ferch, 92, of Charles City, died Sept. 30, 2012, at the Floyd County Medical Center.

Irene was born on July 6, 1920, in rural Rockford, the fifth child of Andrew and Cecelia (Stoeffler) Ewen. She received her education at the Immaculate Conception Academy and graduated from the Academy in 1938. After graduation, Irene worked for two years in a law office in Charles City then for two years at the Oliver Corporation in the purchasing department.

She married Gerald A. Ferch on December 26, 1942, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. To this union three children were born, Geraldine, Carol and Timothy. Irene later worked at the Charles City Savings & Loan which later became Pioneer Savings & Loan from 1963 to 1981 where she had held the officer position of Secretary before retiring in 1981.

Irene was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Catherine’s Circle and the Rosary Society. She volunteered for 20 years scheduling lectors for masses.

Irene’s interests were quilting, reading, traveling and her family. She rarely missed a ballgame, wrestling meet, dance recital or softball game when her grandchildren were involved. Her family was very important to her. Irene was an avid Hawkeye fan.

Irene is survived by her children: Geraldine Ferch (Rochelle Ward), of Cedar Rapids, Carol (Stephen) Kuhn, of Indianola, and Timothy (Barrie McBride) Ferch, of Duluth, Minn.; grandchildren: Bruce (Janet) Ball, of Iowa City, Michelle (David) Robinson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Melissa Kuhn, of Oxford Michigan; a grandaughter-in-law, Dianna Mancino; great-grandchildren: Gabriel, Julian and Andrew Ball and Joshua and Abigail Robinson; as well as a sister-in-law, Val Ewen, of Charles City.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerald in 1984; grandson Charles Ball in 2003; four brothers: Raymond, Lawrence, Kenneth and Robert Ewen; two sisters, Katherine Ewen and Eleanor Shepley; a brother-in law, John Shepley; and three sister- in laws: Pat Ewen, Eva Ewen and Nadine Ewen.
