Family graveside services will be held at a later date.

ROCKFORD - Mildred Elfers, 86, of Rockford, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Per her wishes, Mildred is being cremated and a private family graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

Share your thoughts and memories of Mildred on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Floyd Grace United Methodist Church Educational Building.

Mildred Carrie Wefel Elfers was born July 1, 1926, in Butler County, the daughter of William and Bertha (Buchholz) Wefel. She received her education from rural Butler County schools. On March 30, 1947 she was united in marriage to Carl Elfers at Clarksville. They farmed near Floyd until 1976. Mildred also worked at Trowbridges, Red Owl and Cerro Gordo County Home Health Care.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church at Rockford, Floyd County Extension Council and had served as a 4-H leader. Mildred enjoyed gardening, cooking and playing with the same card club for 50 years. Family was very important to Mildred, and she looked forward to sharing her life with them especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include two children, Fran DeGroote of Rockford and Lynn (Jane) Elfers of Charles City; six grandchildren, Jamie (Andy) McCright, Laura Elfers, Jason DeGroote, Lisa (Nick) Peterson, Jessica (Andy) Dow and Carrie Elfers; six great grandchildren, Clara, Catherine and Lucas Dow, Michael and Aaron McCright, Jena and sister soon-to-arrive, Ava; and two sisters-in-law, Fannie Wefel of Clarksville and Ruby (Virgil) Munsell of Rockford; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl on June 15, 2010; a great granddaughter, Marissa McCright; four brothers: Glen, Roy, Lawrence and Vernon Wefel; and three sisters: Lucille Witt, Viola Garbes, Malita Jacobs.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Rockford or the Fossil and Prairie Center Foundation.
