Leander J. Merfeld, 90, of Salsbury Baptist Home, and formerly of 307 Seventh Street, Charles City, Iowa, died Sunday, December 20, 1992, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.

A funeral Mass was to be celebrated Wednesday morning at 10:30, with Msgr. Stanley J. Hayek celebrating the mass. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Roseville. Fullerton Hage Funeral Home of Charles City was in charge of arrangements. A rosary was recited at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, also a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 8 p.m.

Leander John Merfeld was born on February 2, 1902 in rural Marble Rock, Iowa, the son of John and Katherine (Kramer) Merfeld. He attended school at Roseville. On January 29, 1929 he was married to Gila Gayle Garber, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville. The couple made their home in the rural Marble Rock area, where he farmed for 52 years. He retired in August of 1982, and the couple moved to Charles City. Mr. Merfeld move to the Salsbury Baptist home in November of 1991.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1409, both of Charles City.

Living family members include his wife; four sons and their wives: Richard and Rita Merfeld of Greene, Roger and Edna Merfeld of Rockford, Kenneth and Myrna Merfeld of Mason City, and Raymond and Evelyn Merfeld of East Dubuque, Illinois; two daughters and their husband, May and Francis Stadler of Larkspur, Colorado, and Rose and Theodore Leaver of Houston, Texas; one brother, Edward Merfelt of Marble Rock; three sisters: Mrs. Anne Kobbermann of Charles City, Mrs. Agatha Krambeer of Marble Rock, and Mrs. Christine Staudt** of Stacyville; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Antone, Merrick, Louis and Bernard Merfelt; two sisters, Barbara Staudt and Sister Mary Marcellina O.S.B.; and one granddaughter, Julia Diann Merfelt.
