CHARLES CITYAN DIED IN CRASH

Charles City – Danny Michael Dickhoff, 17, Charles City, Saturday became the first auto fatality in Floyd County in an accident a half-mile north of Floyd.

Dickhoff was riding in a car driven by Larry Montgomery, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Edwin Montgomery, Floyd. The car struck a cow, careened across U.S. Highway 218, and smashed into a parked truck just after midnight.

Dickhoff died instantly of a broken neck. Montgomery was hospitalized at the Cedar Valley Hospital, Charles City. He is reported in satisfactory condition with chest injuries, lacerations and concussion.

The truck, which had been left there when it became disabled, belongs to the Jay W. Craig Co., Minneapolis and Sheffield. According to sheriff’s officers, who investigated the accident, it was parked well off the highway. The cow, which was thrown 77 ½ feet from the point of impact, belonged to Howard Lovik, rural Floyd.

The two boys were graduated from Charles City High School this spring. They were both employed at the Heckman-Reynolds Company here. They were returning from the Mitchell county Fair at Osage when the accident occurred.
