ROCKFORD - Betty Jane Schindele, 88, passed away at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs, on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, following a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. with a one hour-prior visitation on Friday, August 10, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave., Rockford, Iowa. Pastor Robert Scheurer will be officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford. A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church. A funeral lunch will be held at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church before the funeral services on Friday.

Betty Jane (Tumilson) Schindele was the first of 14 children born to Tom and Nellie (Fowler) Tumilson on June 6, 1924. She attended school all her life in Rockford, graduating in 1942. Betty helped raise her siblings, and she and her mom made seven loaves of bread a day and did 14 loads of laundry every other day. After high school, Betty taught school at a country school from 1942-1946. Later she worked at the Rockford Brick and Tile.

On May 19, 1946, Betty married Dale Charles Schindele. To this union two daughters were born: Marcia Ann and Rhonda Lee. They farmed east of Rudd until 1955 when they moved into town.

Betty was the county assessor, postmaster in Rudd, and then the mayor. Betty went to work at the Floyd County Extension Office, where she retired in 1986.

When she retired, she still enjoyed bowling, sewing, playing cards, and Yahtzee. She and Dale traveled with friends, went on many trips to Oklahoma to see their daughter and family. Betty loved to cook and bake, and with lots of family, the food went fast.

She is survived by daughters, Marcia (Johnnie) Thomason of Leedey, Oklahoma, and Rhonda (Scott) Brown of Elk Mound, Wisconsin; sisters, Laura (Dick) Paul of Profitstown, Illinois, Cora (Jim) Schroeder of Gilbert, Arizona, Maria (Melvin) Reiter of Charles City, Nell Tumilson of Irvine, Texas, Lucky Kaufmann of Mesa, Arizona, and Mary Tumilson of Charles City; brothers, Bob (Sheral) Tumilson of Rockford, George (Kathy) Tumilson of Rockford, and Don (Mary) Tumilson of Charles City; grandchildren, Doug Washington of Rockwell, Dawn (Randy) Harrel of Leedey, Okla., Nicole (Darren) Hoeppner of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Kelly (Kevin) Carrier of Hudson, Wisconsin; great-grandchildren, Haley, Sydney, Jessica, Hank and Jack Harrel, of Leedey, Oklahoma, Connor, Kalynn, Samantha and Jakob Washington of Mason City, Jonathan Brown of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Lauren and Reid Carrier of Huddson, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Betty is preceded in death by husband, Dale; parents, Tom and Nellie Tumilson; sister, Thomasena; brothers, David, Sam, and Thomas; nephews, Melvin Reiter Jr., Richard Tumilson Jr. and Jon (J.T.) Tumilson; and several great nieces and great nephews.
