Robert "Bob" Charlton, 85, of Waterloo, died Wednesday March 21, 2012, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be private.

Robert Hugh Charlton was born July 10, 1926, at Salem, Illinois, the son of Hugh and Grace (Ames) Charlton. He received his education at East High School in Waterloo. Bob proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.

On July 1, 1949, he was united in marriage to Marlyn Jacobson. Bob was a carpenter by trade and over the years worked for a number of contractors and for the Cedar Falls Community Schools. He enjoyed working outdoors, cabinet making, fishing and hunting.

Living family members include his wife, Marlyn Charlton of Waterloo; three children, David (Kim) Charlton of Cedar Falls, Brian (Pam) Charlton of Charles City, Cathy Smith of Waterloo and Mark (Wendy) Charlton of Lincoln, Nebr.; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a brother, Dean (Betty) Charlton of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Nancy Charlton; a son-in-law, Bruce Smith; three sisters; and a brother.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to charity of donors choice.
