Varillas C Birney – 1849-1930

V. C. Birney, M. D., has been in practice in Greene since March, 1872. Dr. Birney was born in Canada, in 1849. His father was also a physician, with whom he began the study of medicine. He also practiced with him for a time in Floyd County, attended Rush Medical College in Chicago in 1872-1873 and graduated at the College of Physicians, Keokuk, Iowa in 1878.

His wife was Ada F. Stickney, the daughter of Sydney Stickney, an early settler of Floyd. They have two children Nellie and Clenthas. Mr. Birney’s father was one of the first physicians of Floyd County, where he settled in 1856.

Dr. Birney’s 2nd wife was Ida Helen Hartz, the daughter of Christian Hartz and Magdalena (Bentine) Hartz. She was born in Wisconsin.

They had a daughter Varillas Helen Birney born July 7, 1908 in Greene, Butler Co., Iowa (from Iowa Births/Christenings). She went by Helen. She married O. J. Richman and then in October 1945 married William Kelling.

Dr. V. C. Birney was buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, Butler Co., Iowa
