CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Pastor Roger Hoppenworth, 76, of Charles City, died Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Muse Norris Hospice, Mason City.

Funeral services for Roger Hoppenworth will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16, at Messiah Lutheran Church, Charles City, with Pastor Jane Keel officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery (Buck Creek), rural Sumner.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4-7 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Roger William Hoppenworth was born September 29, 1935, the son of Ted and Lauretta (Knoploh) Hoppenworth in rural Bremer County. Roger was baptized October 13, 1935, and confirmed April 10, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church (Buck Creek), rural Sumner, Iowa. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1953. He graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, in 1957 and Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1961. Roger was ordained a Lutheran minister at his home congregation in June of 1961. Roger served four parishes during his ministry; St. John's Church in Olin, St. Paul and Lake Churches in Renwick, Elvira Zion Church in rural Clinton, and Rock Creek Church in rural Osage.

Roger was united in marriage to Jane Hoth on June 1, 1958. There was great joy in the birth of their four children. His hobbies included fishing at Lake Hattie, Minn., weekly bowling, gardening, planting trees, bike riding, and cheering for his Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Those thankful in sharing Roger's life include his wife of 54 years, Jane; four children, Ruth (Jim) Dunn of Decatur, Ind., Paul (Melanie) Hoppenworth of Rochester, Minn., Becky (Val) Thompson of Knoxville, Iowa, and Joel (Liz) Hoppenworth of DeKalb, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; one great granddaughter, Olivia Dunn; one step-granddaughter; two sisters, Ramona (Bob) Lehman of Lebanon, Mo., Janet (Gene) Lindaman of Westbrook, Minn.; one brother, Jim (Pat) Hoppenworth of Polk City; an aunt; two uncles; six nieces; two nephews; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two nephews, Bobby Lehman and Terry Lehman; his parents-in-law, Floyd and Hilda Hoth.
