William Shannon, Sr., was born in New York state about 1791, and died on November 2, 1876, in Floyd County, Iowa. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd, Iowa.

His wife, Catherine Shannon, was born about 1803 in New York, and died on January 18, 1888, in Floyd County, Iowa. She is also buried in Oakwood.

William and Catherine had the following children:
John S., Robert B., William H. Jr., Eliza Clarissa Robinson, Mary E. Rice, George W., Melissa Brennan, and Malanie Catherine Curtis.
