William and Cordelia Shannon obits

Wm. Shannon Laid to Rest.
Dies at Home of Son in Iowa.

William Shannon was born in Schenectady, New York, October 18, 1821. He died on October 17, 1907, at Thornton, Iowa.

At the age of 26 years he was married to Cordelia Bohn on Thanksgiving day. Shortly after they were married they moved to Illinois where they resided until 1861. At that time they moved to Floyd County, Iowa, and resided there until about 30 years ago. Later they moved to Thornton, Iowa, and thence to their home northwest of Ethan, South Dakota.

A few years ago his wife, Mrs. Shannon, was laid to rest in the Ethan cemetery, at which place Mr. Shannon's remains were interred last Sunday. Services were held in the M. E. Church, Rev. Hathway of Mitchell conducting the last sad rites. The pall bearers were Ed. Cook, W. N. Blackman, W. B. Toby, Chas. Maywald, Geo. Bunel, and Silas Reeves.

Eight children are left to mourn the loss of a loving father. They are Frank Shannon and Lucinda Miller of Ethan; N. H. Shannon of Thornton, Iowa; Sarah Baker, Chewelah, Wash.; Louvica Brewer, Woonsocket, S. D.; Amanda Kendricks, Chewelah, Wash.; Lizzie DeLap, Edgerton, Minn., and Julia Wheeler, St. Cloud, Minn.

For 40 years William Shannon was a member of the Wesleyan church, joining later the M. E. church, of which he was a devoted member. Dying at his son's home in Iowa, it was his request to be buried at Ethan by the side of his wife, which was fully complied with, his son N. H. of Thornton, Iowa, accompanying the remains to Ethan. Thus another father is gone. His words and kindly deeds are now remembered with aching hearts. His place at the table is vacant, his presence everywhere missed. Not 'till the great Day of resurrection when God in the fullness of Mercy and Goodness shall call forth all from the tomb to partake of the unspeakable joys, will the loved ones behold his familiar face and hear his voice among them. Then will all pain and sorrow be done away with. 'Till then let us wait on the Lord, knowing that "all things work together for good to them that love the Lord."
