NORA SPRINGS, IOWA — Melvin H. Manning, 86, of Ponderosa Court Lot 6, Nora Springs, died Wednesday (Dec. 7, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with Pastor Glen Bandel officiating. Inurnment will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs.

Melvin Henry Manning was born on October 8, 1919, in Bassett, Iowa, son of John and Elsie (Bachman) Manning. He graduated from Colwell High School in 1937. Mel owned and operated the Gamble Store for 28 years, and built the Nora Inn Hotel in Nora Springs. He moved to Rogers, Arkansas, in 1979, and back to Nora Springs in 2003.

Mel was united in marriage in July 1942 to Mildred Duncan; she passed away October 1970. Mel later was united in marriage to Shirley Timm on May 28, 1977. Melvin enjoyed woodworking, gardening, flowers, and feeding the birds. He was a member of the Nora Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

Melvin will be greatly missed by his wife, Shirley Manning of Nora Springs; three children, Jerald (Cheryl) Manning of Clarksville, Dennis (Sharon) Manning of Nora Springs and Jeannine (Joel) Larson of Nora Springs; two step-children, Brad Timm of Rogers, Ark., and Linda (Keith) Holder of Fort Smith, Ark.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Mary) Manning of Charles City; sister, Velma Heinselman of Grinnell; two brothers-in-law, Dale Cummings of Charles City and Bill Duncan of Ionia; sister-in-law, Faith Lockey of Bassett; and many nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred Duncan; sister, Dorothy Cummings; and granddaughter, Cindy Manning.
