Biography Information:
Bernice H. Stewart, 91, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Charles City, died at Covenant Medical Center on Saturday, August 6, 2011, of natural causes. Bernice was born June 15, 1920 in rural Bristow, Iowa, daughter of Henry and Jennie Busma Hinders. She graduated from Greene High School.
She married Donald G. Stewart on October 14, 1940 in Rudd, Iowa, at the pastor’s house. He died April 7, 1996.
Bernice was a rural school teacher for 10 years in Butler and Chickasaw County and pioneered a preschool in her home in Waterloo for seventeen years, retiring in 1978. She attended First United Methodist Church for 30 years and later became a member of Kimball Ave. United Methodist Church and was very involved in church activities. She was also involved in Senior Citizen Bible Study Groups since 1970. She also led a Girl Scout Troop for many years.
Bernice is survived by her Daughter Deon (Walter) Senchina of Cedar Falls; daughter Jane Sieleman of Davenport; son-in-law Greg Sieleman of St. Cloud, Minnesota; four grandchildren: David Senchina, Jason Senchina, Stewart Sieleman, and Jennifer Sieleman; and sister Henrietta Shuler of Charles City.
She is preceded in death by her husband, sisters Genevieve Tiemens and Ann Groniga, and brothers: Forrest, John and Clarence Hinders.
