Nora Springs Resident, Dies

Are Still Indefinite

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Nora Springs lost one of its most prominent citizens shortly after noon Wednesday, when Fred W. Schmidt, 62 succumbed at his home here following a comparatively brief illness. He had not been well since a serious illness seven years ago, although his genial disposition and his sprightly step belied that fact. He had been confined to his bed for two weeks before his death.

Mr. Schmidt was active in civic affairs in Nora Springs. He was the president of the First National Bank; which went into voluntary liquidation July 1, 1942. He had held that position since the death of the bank's former president, H. F. Schnedler in January, 1941. Mr. Schmidt had succeeded his father, the late John G. Smith, as vice president of the bank at the time of the latter's death in 1926, and held that position until he assumed the presidency.

He had been town clerk for the past 40 years and still held that office at the time of his death-had been a trustee of Park cemetery association since 1930; was an active member of the Methodist church and the Methodist Brotherhood; Past Master of the Masonic lodge; and a member of the Nora Springs volunteer fire department for many years.

Born April 1, 1880, to John George and Elizabeth Schmidt, in the house which is now occupied by the C. A. Taylor family, Fred Schmidt had spent his entire life in this community. He was edu-cated in the elementary schools of Nora Springs and also was graduated from the old Nora Springs seminary and business college. Following his school days, he was employed as a clerk in various dry goods and grocery stores here, and was the proprietor of a similar establishment himself for a number of years.

At one time he and his brother George, were associated with James Hathaway in a grocery store. Some 20 years ago, he held a position of bookeeper in the First National bank.

He married Addie Cattron, also of Nora Springs, on Aug. 7, 1912 and they made Nora Springs their home throughout their married life.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Addie Schmidt; one brother, George H., of Mason City; an uncle and aunt, John and Mary Meier of Nora Springs, and numerous other relatives.

Funeral arrangements are still indefinite, although services probably will be held in the Methodist church here Saturday afternoon.
