OBITUARY

Julia J. Hunt, daughter of Sylvanus and Mirlitta Hunt, was born at Randolph, Vermont, March 7, 1832, and at the time of her demise was the last member of a family of four children.

Her educational advantages in every way conformed to her station in life, and she enjoyed many privileges unusual in that early period.

While still a young maiden, she was wooed by Eli B. Haynes, and they pledged their mutual vows in marriage at Bernardston, Massachusetts, November 7th, 1848. Five children were born to them, of whom Julius E, Rolla Missouri; Jewett S. and Justin H., prominent members of our own community, still survive to treasure the memory of mother.

With true and admirable pioneer spirit and confidence, Mrs. Hayne and her husband, who was then just entering upon the practice of his chosen profession, moved to Wisconsin, and later to Iowa, and located in Marble Rock April 3, 1866. Her name like that of Dr. Haynes, who preceded her to the Other Shore on August 10, 1916, was almost a tradition in the homes within a wide radius of Marble Rock.

Although the general condition of her health has been delicate for a number of years, her mental faculties retained their usual alertness. She had reached that age at which mortals are no longer sensitive to the record of the calendar, and delighted to talk in a reminiscent vein of the years gone by. The splendid, untiring and tender solicitude of her sons and their families, have brightened and comforted her years when the shadows of life slanted far eastward, and she peacefully passed on, February 1, 1918, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 24 days, truly a ripened sheaf for the Great Reaper. Her church membership had for years been with the Disciples of Christ and she manifested a keen interest in religious matters.

Funeral services were held Sunday after noon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jewett Haynes, conducted by Reverend Farnham, assisted by Reverends Inman and Lilley.

Notes:

Hillside Cemetery listing on Iagenweb.org does not have her listed but it shows her husband:

Haynes Dr. E. B. Aug. 9 1827 Aug. 10 1916 (from WPA) so it is assumed she is also buried there.
