Donald G. “Don” Townsley, 80, of Rudd, died Wednesday (July 28, 2011) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial service for Don will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (July 30, 2011) at the United Methodist Church, 611 6th St., Rudd, with Pastor Jerry Avise-Rouse officiating. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Donald’s family requests that casual attire be worn. Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Donald’s name in care of his family.
Donald Gene Townsley was born on April 12, 1931 in Dougherty, the son of Rex R. and Verle R. (Gibson) Townsley. He attended school in Greene. On July 3, 1952 Don was inducted into the United States Army in Des Moines, Iowa, where he faithfully served his country during Korea until his Honorable discharge on April 2, 1954 in Camp Carlson.
On August 18, 1965 Don was united in marriage to Jan Holtz in Galena, Illinois. For much of their married life Don and Jan lived in Greene and Rudd. Don worked for Stanton Livestock for many years and most recently worked for Ruan Transport before his retirement.
Don was a life-long Green Bay Packers fan, he loved watching their games and cheering them on. He also enjoyed watching the Figure 8 races and cheering on his grandson, Kenny, traveling to Britt to see the draft horses, and liked all animals, especially his dog, Mickey. Don was a member of the American Legion in Greene.
Those grateful in sharing in Don’s life are his wife, Jan, of Rudd; his children, Pam (Ken) Boge, Orchard, Greg (Mary) Townsley, Lyle, Minn., Curt Townsley, Lyle, Minn., Tammy Townsley, Tiffin, Iowa, Kevin (Liz) Holtz, Hinesville, Arkansas, and Craig (Karla) Holtz, Rudd, Iowa; his grandchildren, Kenny and Deb Boge, Aaron and Julie Boge, Amy and Tony McFarland, Tanya and Jeff Jensen, Ashley and Jeff Higgins, Nikki Townsley, Lacey Holtz and Brittany Olson, Justin (Cassia) Holtz, Kelsey Heitz, Kory and Jeromy Walker, and Jeremy Collins; 14 great grandchildren; his sisters, Carol Foster and Sally (Dallas) Foster; as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
