The family of Lewis Vernon Jacobson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs in his memory.

Lewis Vernon Jacobson was born on Oct. 30, 1909, in Gunder, Iowa, the son of John E. and Julia J. (Skarshaug) Jacobson. He was baptized in the East Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Norway Lutheran Church rural St. Olaf. At an early age he moved with his family to St. Olaf where Lewis got his elementary education. In 1924, he again moved with his family to Clermont where he attended and graduated from high school.

In 1932, he began working with his father in the grocery business in Nora Springs. It was here he met and on July 25, 1935, he was united in marriage to Nina B. Sellon at the Lutheran parsonage in Williams, Iowa, where his older brother was pastor at the time. She preceded him in death in January 1992.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on July 10, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines and served as an administrative NCO at Ft. Carson, Colo., during World War II until his honorable discharge on October 21, 1945. After his honorable discharge he went back into the grocery business for five years.

In 1951, Lewis and his wife Nina began working at the First State Bank in Nora Springs. He worked at the bank for 25 years and retired as vice president in 1975.

In his banking years, he was a charter member of the Nora Springs Kiwanis Club and served in all the local offices. He worked tirelessly to accomplish a new Lutheran Church building in Nora Springs in 1954 and was active in promoting and getting the new First State Bank building constructed in 1969.

On retirement, they moved to the former Hanford Hotel in Mason City and spent time traveling in the 48 contiguous states, as well as trips to the Holy Land and the Scandinavian countries in 1975, the British Isle in 1977, and the grand tour of Europe in 1978. In late 1978 they moved to Lakeland, Fla., where they lived for three years in a new mobile home park.

In late 1981, they returned to Cedar Rapids because of Nina's cancer condition which she wanted treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She died in January 1992, lacking three days of being married for 56 and a half years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs and taught Sunday school for several years. He was a Boy Scout leader in Nora Springs, and a member of Rock Sirius Masonic Lodge No.294-Nora Springs and H.D.S. American Legion Post 449-Nora Springs. He was also on the board of directors at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

During his long and active life Lewis has maintained a close association with the Lutheran Church and looks forward to a glorious reunion with his loved ones who have preceded him in death, at the feet of his savior and redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Left to cherish his memory is a niece, E. Jane Jones and her husband, Paul, of Cedar Rapids; a nephew, James Lehmkuhl and his wife, Agnes, of Cedar Rapids; several great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
