GERALD M. 'JERRY' PARKER
CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Gerald M. "Jerry" Parker, 71, of Charles City and Burkville, Texas, passed away on Friday (Aug. 30, 2002) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital of Mesothelioma (asbestos lung cancer).
Gerald was born March 17, 1931, to Lowell and Clarice (Campbell) Parker, at Midway, Floyd County.
He was married on October 25, 1952, to Maxine Sigler in Las Cruses, N.M. To this union eight children were born, Starla, Sheila, Dana, Jerry, ZoAnne, Brent, Michelle and Glade. Jerry loved to work on antique cars, play cards and spend time with his grandchildren. Jerry farmed until 1992 and currently worked for State Farm Insurance as a crop adjuster.
Gerald served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1953 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Chanute Field AFB in Rantoul, Ill., Clark Field in the Philippine Islands and Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine; his children and their spouses, Starla Parker, of Garner, Dana Parker and his wife, Barbara, of Houston, Jerry Parker and his wife, Jeannie, of Hiawatha, Brent Parker and his wife, Julie, of Charles City, Michelle Parker, of Waverly, and Glade Parker and his wife, Valerie, of Floyd; 16 grandchildren, Heather (Joshua) Weber, Haley (Joel) King, Lindsay and Larrisa Parker, Casy, Ryan, Ben and Tyler Parker, Brock and Brandon Kielty and Alohna Ammons, Trenton and Renae Parker, Casondra and Levi Roethler, and Dallas Parker; two great-grandchildren, Skylar and Trevor King; two stepgranddaughters, Carrie Godrey and Jenny Dykes; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Marcus Dykes, and Cooper, Allison and Sarah Godfrey; brothers, Melvin Parker, of Sun City, Calif. and Curtis Parker, of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Sheila and ZoAnne Parker; brother, Carroll L. Parker; parents, Lowell Parker and Clarice Parker Dunn; grandparents, Thomas and Blanche Emmerson Campbell and Cyrus and Hattie Sperbeck Parker.
His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens with military honors by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit Post no. 3914. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Sunnyside Chapel Funeral Home, 2267 Old Highway Road, and one hour before services on Tuesday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
