JOHANNES KAPPA

MASON CITY - Johannes Kappa, 89, of Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 8, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour before the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Johannes Kappa was born March 31, 1912, in Orava, Estonia, the son of Peetr and Anna (Ojovee) Kappa. He attended school in Estonia. He lived in Estonia for 32 years, where he served in the Estonian Army for a short period. He later moved to Germany, where he met and married Silvi Tonisson on Feb. 4, 1947. They lived there until moving to the United States in 1949.

He served in the United States Army during World War II as a driver. He was honorably discharged in 1949. Following his discharge, they moved to Rockford, Iowa, until making their home in Mason City in 1951. He worked for Armour as a powerhouse engineer for 25 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Silvi, on June 19, 2000; three brothers and three sisters.
