GLENN M. SLINGER

CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Glenn M. Slinger, 94, formerly of 100 Charles St., died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

His funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Interment will be held in Sunnyside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, with a scriptural service at 6 p.m.

Glenn was born on June 15, 1907, the son of Fred A. and Marie (Schneider) Slinger, in Riverton Township, Floyd County. He attended and graduated from the Charles City School district in 1925.

Glenn enjoyed kicking up his heels at barn dances. It was there that he met the lovely Grace Howe, and on February 23, 1930, they were united in marriage in St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Glenn was the first merchant to sell Grade A Milk using Holstein cattle and the last merchant to sell Grade A Milk when he retired in the early 1970s. Glenn loved oranges, bananas and corn flakes but his favorite treat was a teaspoon of plain sugar right out of the sugar bowl.

He was a man with an open heart who would ponder a problem until he found a solution, no matter who asked for the advice.

The joy of his life was his family and friends. Everyday he would pick up his grandchildren from school and drive them the two blocks to his house on Charles Street. It could have been snowing, raining, a warm sunny day or one with a cool autumn breeze and he would still be waiting for the sound of that three o'clock bell.

Glenn was involved in helping his community. He was involved with the Farm Bureau, the Floyd County Fair Association, charter member of the Floyd County Pork Association, Heritage Club of CNB and the Grade A Milk Association.

Glenn was blessed with 94 years, leaving many memories to be cherished and shared by family and friends for generations.

He is survived by one daughter, Marlene Ann and her husband, Don Holthaus, of Charles City; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Slinger, of Colwell; one sister, Berniece Hobert, of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Rhonda and her husband, Jon Sult, of Marble Rock, Kevin Slinger and his wife, Pam, of Waverly, Rick Slinger and his wife, Tina, of Charles City, Paul Slinger, of Johnston, Dr. Anthony Slinger and his wife, Carol, of Charles City, Joel Holthaus, of Waverly, and JoAnn Holthaus and fiancé, Edgar Hervert, of Charles City; two special friends, Butch and Lou Meyer, of Charles City; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; his parents; two sisters, Dorothy Gabel and Jennie Henry; two half sisters, Mary McMahon and Beatrice Rose; one half brother, Vern; two sons, Dale and Roger Slinger; and one grandson, David.
