MERLE G. MEADER

ROCKFORD - Merle G. Meader, 78, of 602 First Ave. S.W. in Rockford died Saturday (July 14, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford with the Rev. Clarence Balsum officiating. Interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 302 W Main in Rockford. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Merle was born on July 11, 1923, in Dent, Minn., the son of Earl and Minnie (Larson) Meader. At the age of five, Merle and his family made their final move to the Rockford area.

During high school, he was employed by the bakery and upon graduation he decided to join the Navy. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and was honored with the rank of Motor Machinist's Mate Second Class.

During the time he served his country he was recognized and awarded with the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (One Star), Commendation Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1946, Merle left the Navy to return home to find the love of his life and on June 3, 1955, he was united in marriage to Annabelle Joesting.

Merle was known as a hard worker, determined and a positive person that believed that anything was possible if you had a goal and the heart to believe. He spent endless hours working for White Farm in Charles City and helping others when needed.

He was a life long member of the VFW and of the American Legion.

Merle enjoyed listening to KCMR every evening with Big Band music being his favorite. He loved fishing with his son and strolling through the timber to pick mushrooms and gooseberries to be eaten or canned. He was a superb cook that wasn't afraid of using spices but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and his three- year-old granddaughter.

Merle's memory will be cherished and honored by those that loved him dearly, his wife, Annabelle; one son, Bradly and his wife, Kelly, of Hampton and their daughter, Caitlin Ann; one sister, Mildred McElroy, of Rockford; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Helen; and two brothers, Glen and Lee.
