MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Clarence W. Debner, 78, of 620 College Street, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Marble Rock, with interim Pastor Clarence Baalson officiating. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock where there will be a public scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before the services Tuesday.

Clarence William Debner was born April 3, 1923, in Coldwater Township, Butler County, near Vilmar, a son of Ferdinand Fred and Agnes Margaret (Abendroth) Debner, and died Friday, July 13, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

He was baptized on May 23, 1923, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar and as a child moved to a farm near Marble Rock. He received his education in the rural schools and later graduated second in his class from the Marble Rock High School in 1940.

He was inducted into the United States Army April 14, 1943, where served with the 42nd Infantry Division in Northern France. He was awarded several medals including the Bronze Star. Following his discharge on April 20, 1946, he began farming in the Marble Rock, Greene and Colwell area.

On Dec. 13, 1947, he was united in marriage to Helen Patterson of St. Ansgar at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. From 1950-1956 he was owner of Hartwick Tap in Hartwick, Iowa, and a plumbing and tiling business in Belle Plaine before returning to the Marble Rock area. They moved into Marble Rock in 1984 following his retirement.

Clarence will be remembered for his great sense of humor and for never being willing to give up even when his health was failing. His interests included sports, crossword puzzles and being an avid reader. He was active in the Boy Scouts, V.F.W. in Charles City and the American Legion posts of Greene and Marble Rock.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Helen of Marble Rock; three daughters, Linda Marlene Debner of Marble Rock, Patricia Sue and her husband, Kim, of Marengo, and Joan Marie and her husband, Jeffrey Wright, of Holmen, Wis; five grandchildren, Paul and Sara Nelson and Alicia, Krysta and Jeremy Wright; three sisters, Viola Keith of Marble Rock, Della Van Fleet of Cedar Falls and Marlene Gerholdt of Waterloo; one brother. Dean Debner of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lloyd.
