CHARLES CITY - John O. Gordon, 91, of Charles City died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at Cross Lutheran Church in Charles City. Pastor James Grabitske will officiate. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery at Elma.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Friday, and Saturday at the church an hour prior to the service.

John O. Gordon, 91, of Charles City, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Cedar Health in Charles City.

Funeral services for John Gordon will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cross Lutheran Church, 312 1st Avenue in Charles City. Pastor James Grabitske will officiate. Burial will be in Howard Cemetery at Elma. There will be an honor guard by the Charles City Police Department and a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the church an hour prior to the service.

John Oliver Gordon was born October 30, 1919 at Jerico, the son of Edward and Anna (Otteson) Gordon. He received his education at Jerico. John served in the United States Army during World War II. On June 17, 1946, he was united in marriage to Esther Michael. He worked for a few years at Oliver/White Farm Corporation. From 1953 to 1981 he was with the Charles City Police Department where he served as Chief of Police from 1966 to 1981. He was a member of Cross Lutheran Church, Rotary, V.F.W. and the American Legion. His interests included fishing and traveling. John always looked forward to spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Living family members include two children, Carol Laine of Gainsville, Florida, and David (Lori) Gordon of Charles City; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two brothers, James (Peggy) Gordon of West Hurley, N.Y. and Merle (Ann) Gordon of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and two sisters, Stella Alexander of Calif. and Charlene (LaVerne) Cutsforth of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther on June 10, 2002; a brother, Edward Gordon; and two sisters, Thelma Wignall and Ruth Duncan.
