Louis Frederick Culbert was born May 18, 1913, in Minersville, Pa., the son of Thomas Jefferson and Minette W. (Zerbe) Culbert. In January 1914, he moved with his parents to Mason City where he later started school. In 1920, his family moved to Charles City where he attended grade school in the old McKinley School.

In 1927, his family moved to Omaha, Neb., where Louis enrolled in the Omaha Technical High School where he graduated in 1931 and he later attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 1935, Louis moved back to Charles City where he was engaged in the electrical business as a partner with his father. He was united in marriage to Etta Lubben of Charles City at Milbank, S.D., on July 26, 1938.

During World War II, Louis, with his wife and son, Allan, moved to Omaha, Neb. where he worked for the Glenn L. Martin Co. at Offut Air Base as a layout machinist and instructor, building B-26 and B-29 bombers. During the Korean conflict in the early 1950s, he worked at Solar Aircraft in Des Moines where he served as a layout inspector in their experimental department. His last employment was with the Oliver/White Farm facility working in the inspection department until his retirement in 1973.

Louis enjoyed bowling, golfing and was an avid reader. While playing cards, especially cribbage, was an important interest, his primary hobby was the collecting and studying of postage stamps which he had done since the age of 8 years. He was a charter member and one of the founders of the Trans-Mississippi Philatelic Society and was a life member of the American Philatelic Society. Louis was frequently consulted by fellow collectors who respected his lifelong study of the subject.
