Melvin Charles Melcher, son of Charles Oscar and Amelia (Nichols) Melcher was born at Charles city, Iowa on December 27, 1904. He graduated from high school at Charles City, Iowa and from John Fletcher (now Vennard) College at University Park, Iowa. He married Opal Maxine Getty on September 23, 1930 at Waterloo, Iowa. Together they served churches around Iowa until their retirement in 1970 when they moved to Marion, Iowa.

Melvin died on January 5, 1985. A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church in Marion, Iowa, with Rev.Dick Watkins and Rev. Nicholas Longworth officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery at Charles City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Opal of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Vernon Charles Melcher and James Russell Melcher; three brothers, Raymond Melcher of Rudd, Iowa, Oscar Melcher of Charles City, Iowa, and Stanley Melcher of Medford, Massachusetts, and two sisters, Elsie Wulff of Charles City, Iowa and Helen Irons of Clarence, Iowa.
