ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Frances Lucille Christiansen, 88, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011, at Windhaven Assisted Living in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 24, at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St., St. Ansgar.

Frances was born on August 13, 1922, on the Hofler Century Farm northeast of Nora Springs to Edward and Grace (Forbes) Hofler. She attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Nora Springs High School. She furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. Frances then taught country school at Prairie Center until the time of her marriage to Larry Christiansen in June of 1944. They lived on various Naval bases during World War II and returned to start farming in Mitchell County.

Frances enjoyed serving as a Sunday school teacher, 4-H leader, president of the Ladies Aid, church circle and various other community services. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 26, 1957.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Christiansen; parents, Edward and Grace Hofler; and sister, Marcella Howe.

Frances is survived by two daughters, Janice (Richard) Stanco of Brookfield, Conn., and Shirley Fossey of Waterloo; three grandsons, Todd (Marissa) Fossey of Plymouth, Minn., Ben (Melissa) Fossey of Minnetonka, Minn., and Tim (Amy) Fossey of Otsego, Minn.; two step-grandchildren, Steve (Barbara) Stanco of Danbury, Conn., and Suzanne (Fraser) Payne of Hiawassee, Ga.; four great-grandchildren, Robyn Stanco, Rowan and Addison Fossey and Mason Fossey; and three sisters Patricia Little, Aline Sutton and Anita Gerk.

Memorial donations may be directed to First Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice and Windhaven Assisted Living in Cedar Falls, where Frances recently made her home.
