NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Walter H. "Boot" Stoltenberg, 89, of Nora Springs died early Monday morning, March 21, 2011, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 24, at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, with the Rev. Jerry Avise-Rouse of the United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, where military honors will be presented by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Memorials may be directed to the Walter H. Stoltenberg Memorial Fund in care of the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.
Walter Herman Stoltenberg was born on Jan. 17, 1922, in rural Cerro Gordo County to Herman and Anna (Hanson) Stoltenberg. He attended country school until the eighth grade.
On July 3, 1942, Walter was united in marriage to Evelyn "Maxine" Rheingans in Mason City; to this union two children were born.
In December of 1942, Walter entered into the United States Army, where he honorably and faithfully served his country until his honorable discharge in January of 1946.
Once he returned home, Walter quickly began farming again. In 1948, Walter and Maxine moved to a farm near Rockwell where they farmed and made their home for 13 years before moving to another farm near Nora Springs. They resided outside of Nora Springs until March of 1984 when they retired and moved into town.
In his free time, Walter enjoyed spending time with his family, playing card games, especially 500, pitching horseshoes, and woodworking. He also liked watching Minnesota Twins baseball on television. Walter always delighted in getting a new vehicle, but he never strayed from his Ford models!
He was a member of the American Legion and the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs.
Walter is survived by his two children, Larry (Nancy) Stoltenberg, Palmdale, Calif., and Carrie Ann (Randy) Lowery, Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Scot (Melanie) Stoltenberg, Craig Stoltenberg, Sarah Stoltenberg, and David Stoltenberg; great-grandchildren, Jenna and Evan Stoltenberg, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Preceding Walter in death are his parents; wife, Maxine; three brothers, and one sister.
