Walter Herman Stoltenberg was born on Jan. 17, 1922, in rural Cerro Gordo County to Herman and Anna (Hanson) Stoltenberg. He attended country school until the eighth grade.

On July 3, 1942, Walter was united in marriage to Evelyn "Maxine" Rheingans in Mason City; to this union two children were born.

Once he returned home, Walter quickly began farming again. In 1948, Walter and Maxine moved to a farm near Rockwell where they farmed and made their home for 13 years before moving to another farm near Nora Springs. They resided outside of Nora Springs until March of 1984 when they retired and moved into town.

In his free time, Walter enjoyed spending time with his family, playing card games, especially 500, pitching horseshoes, and woodworking. He also liked watching Minnesota Twins baseball on television. Walter always delighted in getting a new vehicle, but he never strayed from his Ford models!
