Colonel Sydney J. “Sid” Wilkins, 75, of Nora Springs and formerly of Harpers Ferry, died Wednesday (March 2, 2011) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday (March 7, 2011) at the First United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs with the Rev. Jerry Avise-Rouse as officiant. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Monday.
Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Sid’s name.
Sydney John Wilkin, III was born on February 9, 1936 on a farm near Nora Springs to Sydney J. Wilkins, II and Engel (Rieman) Wilkins. He attended school in the Nora Springs school system and graduated amongst the class of 1954. Following high school Sid attended Auctioneering College.
For many years Sid farmed and worked as an auctioneer. He was very involved in swap meets and was well known for founding and coordinating Sportsman’s Exchange since around 1956, an annual swap meet held near Osage.
In his earlier years Sid enjoyed trail riding, bowling, and raising horses. For many summers he also set up and operated the Nora Springs Roller Rink. Sid always had a passion for coon hunting, and was one of the founding members of the Iowa State Coon Hunters Association. He also liked fishing, canoeing, and camping; he was also an excellent dog trainer. Sid will be greatly missed by his many hunting companions.
Those grateful in sharing in Sid’s life is his brother-in-law, William Ingersolln, Grinell; sister-in-law, Alice Wilkins, Nora Springs; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Preceding Sid in death are his parents and siblings, Verniece Wilkins, Verdean Ingersolln, Lorain “Bud” (Margaret) Wilkins, Alva Wilkins, Harold Wilkins, and (Jan) Wilkins.
