#3: News Story

PFC. L. SHOREY IS
WOUNDED IN ACTION;
SECOND IN FAMILY

Pfc. Lawrence Shorey was wounded in action January 9, in Belgium, according to word received by his sister, Mrs. Sam Smith, Jr., of Osage. It is only six weeks ago that Mrs. Smith was notified that another brother, Pfc., Ralph Shorey, had been wounded in action in Germany, and died the next day.

No details concerning Lawrence were received other than he was injured.

He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Shorey, Sr., of Floyd and until he entered the army was employed in the Oliver factory at Charles City.

His wife is the former Madeline Snyder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Snyder, who were residents of near Osage until about 14 years ago when they moved to Charles City. She is a half-sister to Gaylord Snyder.

Private Shorey had been in the army for two years and in foreign service since August. He was in the glider section of the infantry.

Another son of the family, T. Sgt. Delbert Shorey, was in France the last time his parents heard from him. He wrote that he was "fighting in a snow storm," and had not learned of the death of Ralph at the time the letter was written.
