GREENE, IOWA - The funeral for Velma M. Shreve, 86, of 502 W. Traer St., will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with Pastor Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene. A public scripture service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the church Wednesday.

Velma Mardine Smith was born Oct. 12, 1914, in rural Dougherty, Floyd County, a daughter of Clifford Leo and Lillie Elizabeth (Schaefer) Smith, and died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital from complications of a heart attack.

She was baptized August 15, 1915, and confirmed April 1, 1928, at St. Peter Lutheran Church. She received her education in the rural Floyd County schools and graduated from Greene High School in 1934 with a normal training certificate.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth Earl Shreve on June 6, 1934, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Waverly.

They first made their home in Bristow and later moved to Greene, where they farmed until 1954. Velma worked for Shaffer's Jack Spratt Grocery, Morey's Westside Grocery and the Farmers Inc. Co-op Society, all of Greene. In 1966 they moved to Charles City, where they purchased the Riverview Motel, which they operated until 1974, at which time they retired and returned to Greene.

Following retirement Velma enjoyed crocheting sweaters and making quilt tops for the church mission projects. She was a member of the Chat-a-While Club and the Birthday Club.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Beverly and her husband, Thomas Menk, of New Brighton, Minn.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jill and Barry Froehlich of Circle Pines, Minn., Roger and Beth Menk of North Oaks, Minn., Bryce and Colette Menk of Gem Lake, Minn., Sara and Scott Chartier and John Menk, all of New Brighton, Minn.; five great-grandchildren, Hallie Froehlich, Spencer Menk, Colton Menk, Britta Menk and Danielle Menk; four sisters, Lela Menken, Irene Allen, Lois and her husband, Robert Eliasen, all of Greene, and Fern and her husband, Lyle Bienemann of Clarksville; and many nieces and nephews.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, on February 18, 1996; her parents; one sister, Iva Barnett; and one brother, Dale Smith, in infancy.
