Clare J. Holmes

NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Clare J. Holmes, 86, a retired Nora Springs farmer, died Friday (Feb. 7, 1986) at a Nora Springs nursing home.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Lon Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery, rural Nora Springs.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs.

Mr. Holmes was born on August 11, 1899, in Clear Lake, to Henry and Dora Karr Holmes. He attended school in Clear Lake and married Lillie T. Spilman on June 28, 1924, at Nashua. They moved to Denver where he managed a Piggly Wiggly Store.

In 1930 they moved to the Clear Lake area and farmed. They continued to farm after moving to the Nora Springs area in 1936, and retired in 1946. Mr. Holmes worked for the ASCS office, at grain elevators measuring corn acres.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, where he sang in the choir and was Sunday School superintendent. After he retired he was active in the Nora Springs Boy Scouts. He was also an avid fisherman.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Morris (Barbara) Clark, Ventura, and Bonnie Kartel, Playa Del Rey, California, one son, Duane Holmes, Nora Springs, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
