In Mason City Tuesday
After 8 Weeks' Illness

John Gashel, 74, died about 8:30 Tuesday morning, Feb. 1, (1944) in the Mercy hospital at Mason City. He had been taken to the hospital Monday morning following an illness of about eight weeks at his home here.

Born on a farm near Beaver Dam, Wisconsin on June 8, 1869, he came to Iowa with his parents, Joseph and Ann Kolb Gashel, at the age of eight years. He resided on a farm all of his life until 12 years ago, when the family moved to Nora Springs. He was married to Lydia Gildner on Sept. 23, 1897.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Lloyd Gashel, living on a farm near Nora Springs and Vernon, at Camp Barkely, Texas; one grandson; four brothers, Adolph, of Waterloo; Ezydor, Clear Lake, Jacob, Nora Springs, and Joseph of Mason City; and five sisters, Mrs. Mary Carman and Mrs. Ida Govro of Rockford, Mrs. Emma Rodrian, Cross Lake, Minn., Mrs. Fred Uker, Nora Springs, and Mrs. Julia Idhe of Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Nora Springs at 2:30 Thursday afternoon with the pastor, the Rev. Robert Davies, in charge. The body lay in state at the Sheckler funeral home until the services.
