FERN BILLINGS
NORA SPRINGS, IOWA - Fern Billings, 88, of Maple View Manor, died Sunday (May 16, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Nora Springs Christian Church with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, and will resume one hour prior to the services at the church Wednesday.
Memorials may be directed to the Nora Springs Christian Church in memory of Fern Billings.
Maybelle Fern (Gallup) Billings was born October 3, 1910, at Glen Elder, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Helen (Benedict) Gallup. She moved with her family to Iowa as a child. She graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1928.
Fern was married to Daudell L. Billings on March 30, 1929. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in March of 1989.
She was a lifelong member of the Nora Springs Christian Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and supervisor of the Sunday School. She sang in the choir, was a past president of the Christian Women's Fellowship and was a past financial secretary of the church board.
Fern enjoyed sewing, doing upholstery work and was well known for her many quilts. She loved spending time in her church and especially enjoyed her children and her grandchildren.
She is survived by two children, Doris VerHelst and her husband, Don, Nora Springs, and Jim Billings and his wife, Bonnie, Nora Springs; four grandchildren, Cindy Fink and her husband, Chuck, Nora Springs, Janice Boostrom and her husband, the Rev. Paul Boostrom, Charles City, Dan VerHelst and his wife, Neva, Mason City, and Michael VerHelst and his wife, Lisa, Nora Springs; three great-grandchildren, Justin Fink, Mason City, Nathan Fink, Mason City, and Christi Boostrom, Charles City; one sister, Ruby Wilson, Nora Springs; one brother, Leroy Gallup, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daudell Billings in 1989; her parents; five brothers; four sisters; and one grandson, Bruce Billings in 1975.
