Ronald Dean Schlick (Ron or RD) was born in Odessa, Tex. on May 26, 1944, to Dean F. and Geneva K. (Davidson) Schlick while his dad was using his watch making skills to repair and build bomb sights for the United States Army. Ron was a Charles City native for most of his life with exception of the wonderful time he spent going to school, working and living in Chicago. To Ron, Charles City was not only a wonderful place to live but a historically significant town to be studied, honored and preserved.
With his experience as an Interior Designer, and a degree in Interior Design from the Chicago Academy of the Arts in Chicago, Ron was perfectly suited to become the successor to his father’s jewelry business. In 1977 Ron moved to Charles City and renovated the store we all know on Main Street. Both the store and the jewelry were wonderfully conceived and Ron’s expertise as a jewelry designer was well known everywhere.
His restored Victorian home was also a reflection of his vast understanding of history and interior design. Ron also loved gardening and orchids were his favorite flower. Ron often paraphrased an old Japanese saying when asked why he liked orchids so well, Ron would state, “If you spent your entire life looking for the perfect orchid it would not have been a wasted life.” From a young age Ron always loved the arts and history. If you had a question about anything, Ron was your answer man. He was quite often seen with his nose in a book trying to absorb any and every interesting subject. Ron loved to cook gourmet food and the taste of fine wine. This was only second to one thing, his love of friends and family.
Although Ron was a very private person his close friends knew of his endearing love for them and others. He had an insatiable desire to grow and learn and was always willing to help when asked. Whether hanging out in his high school years with Ron Noah, John and Carol Anderson, or inviting his friends and relatives to his summer party, Ron was always the quintessential host and always had a story to tell or to expound on his vast knowledge of almost any subject.
Ron was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council twice, and noon Kiwanis. He also had a long affiliation with the Charles City Historical Society, the Carrie Lane Chapman House and the Art Center of Charles City.
Living family members include his father, Dean Schlick of Charles City; a brother, David (Mary) Schlick of Helena, Mont.; and two nephews, Joshua Schlick and Matthew Schlick.
Ron was preceded in death by two of the most influential people in his life, David Michael Tee, his longtime Chicago friend from his college days who died in 1990, and of course his mother Gen, the most indelible influence on his life. She passed away in 1991 and since had never been far from Ron’s thoughts.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, IA 50401.
