Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, May 19, [1953] at the Sheckler funeral home for Joseph Earl Hewitt, 74, who died suddenly about 7:15 p.m. Friday May 15. He was stricken while at work in the garden.

The Rev. W. F. Ellerbeck, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church, officiated at the rites, and interment was in Park cemetery.

Mr. Hewitt was born Sept. 24, 1878, on a small farm near Kirkville, Mo. He was the third child of Jerry and Mary Meier Hewitt, one of five sons and five daughters. He grew to manhood in Missouri.

He came to Iowa as a young man, settling in Jasper county. There he was united in marriage with Martha Van Dusseldorph on Dec. 14, 1904. Two sons and two daughters were born to the couple.

Their next move was to Wright county, where they were engaged in farming. In 1930 they moved into the Nora Springs community. During the past nine years, Mr. Hewitt had made his home with his son Elmer, and family. Last fall his health began to fail noticeably, but he continued to be up and about until he was stricken suddenly on May 15.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1944; one daughter, Mary, in 1941; three brothers, three sisters, his parents and one great grandchild.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wilma Duncan of St. Ansgar; two sons, Elmer Hewitt and Edward Hewitt, both of Nora Springs; two sisters, Hattie Pearl Kaser of Mesa, Arizona, and Mary Evaline of Washington; one brother, Harvey Marion of Wilmathsville, Missouri; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
