Clarence Eugene Sellon, 85, died at 5 a.m. Friday December 18, [1953] at the Norby Nursing Home, where had been a patient since August 27.

A life-long resident of Iowa and a citizen of Floyd county since 1886, Mr. Sellon, best known in Nora Springs as "Gene," had been in failing health for a number of years.

He was born in Black Hawk county, near Cedar Falls, on August 9, 1868, the son of William and Theresa Betsie (Barber) Sellon. At the age of 18 he came to Floyd county and rented a 400 acre stock farm, near Nora Springs, which he operated for a year, after which he farmed for four years near Mason City, and then for four years near Rudd.

Founded Two Firms

Mr. Sellon established two organizations which are still important in Floyd county. In the summer of 1898, while living in Rudd, he established the Farmers Exchange, now operating as the Farmers Co-Operative company at Rudd. He was the first president and acted in that capicity for five years. In 1903 he organized the telephone company at Rudd, of which he was president and manager. That firm is the Farmers Mutual Telephone company, currenty serving the towns of Nora Springs, Rudd, Rockford and Floyd.

Mr. Sellon at one time owned eight hundred acres of land, in addition to considerable town property. He kept throughbred Percheron imported horses, Durham cattle and Chester White hogs; selling his thoroughbred stock and moving to Nora Springs in 1912, after which he turned his entire attention to his business as a real estate dealer.

Married in 1896

On February 27, 1896, he was married to Minnie Augusta Witzel of Ulster township. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1946. Mrs. Sellon and nine children survive him. The children are: W. B. (Bryan) Sellon of Seattle; Mrs. Earl (Hazel) Schultz of Mason City; Mrs. Earl (Sadie) Kimber of Seattle; Loyal Sellon, at home; Mrs. C. W. (Fern) White of Seattle, Mrs. L. V. (Nina) Jacobson and Earl Arthur Sellon, both of Nora Sprngs; Clarence Sellon of Seattle; and Harold Sellon of Nora Springs.
