CHARLES WINFIELD HART

IOWA CITY, IOWA - Charles Winfield Hart, 66, formerly of Nora Springs and Charles City, died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2000) at his apartment in Iowa City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Nora Springs United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye Ave. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs, with military honors conducted by the Nora Springs American Legion.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles was the first child of Benjamin Winfield Hart and Irene (Bowers) Hart and was born on April 22, 1933, at the Hart family farm northeast of Nora Springs. As a child, Charles attended grade school and junior school in Nora Springs. The Hart family later moved to Charles City, where he graduated from high school.

He married Thelma Tracy in 1953, in Waterloo. He later married LaVonne Santee in 1958 in Nora Springs. They were divorced in 1978. Charles Hart served in the United States Navy in the Korean War. Charles worked for a number of years as a manager for various grocery and convenient stores in Iowa and Illinois. He later retired for health reasons and lived at Spencer Towers apartments in Rock Island, Ill., at which time he became an active member of their residence council.

He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rock Island. Charles was an active member of the American Legion and a volunteer for the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. He enjoyed visiting with friends, attending Hart family reunions and collecting information regarding his family history.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Sue, from his first marriage; his son, Lyle Winfield Hart and his wife, Irene, and their four children of Davenport; his daughter, Melodie Jane (Hart) (Kroeger) Ricketts and her child, of Davenport; one sister, Jane (Hart) (Lowry) Wiseman and her husband, Clifton Wiseman, of Sheffield; and nephew Mark Alan Lowry and his wife, Suzan, and three children of Silver Springs, Md. He was the proud grandfather to five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three of his children, Ethel Mae Hart, Scott Charles Hart and Charles Winfield, Jr.; his parents, mother Irene (Bowers) Hart, and father, Benjamin Winfield Hart; and his brother-in-law, Melvin Dwain Lowry. Charles Hart will be missed.
