OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA - Stanley A. Witzel Sr., 95, passed away Monday, December 20, 1999, at his residence.

Stanley was born on November 18, 1904, in Rudd, Floyd county, Iowa, to Ed and Bertha (Muller) Witzel. He received his agricultural engineering degree at Iowa State University, Ames, and his masters degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Stanley married Adalene Jahns of Spring Valley, Minn., on March 3, 1927. He taught agricultural engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for more than 40 years, specializing in farm structures and soils. During this time, Professor and Adalene Witzel lived in the Cooksville and Madison area.

He lived in Nigeria, Africa, for three years, where he established the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of IFE near Ibadan, Nigeria. Professor Witzel was a recipient of the 1972 Cyrus Hall McCormick Award from the American Society of Agricultural Engineering for achievement in agriculture. Stanley also received the Silver Plate Award. Professor Witzel was very dedicated to his career, devoting much of his time to various committees and honorable causes.

He retired in 1972, moving to Texas and starting a citrus farm. In 1991 he met and married Phoebe Borden and resided in Oceanside, Calif., writing and publishing two books on his full and successful life.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Phoebe (Borden) Witzel, of Oceanside, Calif.; sons, Dr. Stanley Jr. (Betty) Witzel, of North Caldwell, N.J., and Jahn (Janice) Witzel, of Stoughton, Wis.; sisters, Edna, Selma and Iola; grandchildren, Blair (Heidi), Erich (Melissa), David, Christi, Glenn (Sandy) and Laura; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Andrew, Lily and Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Adalene (Jahns) and Freda (Martin); sons, Wilford and Theodore; and a brother, Homer.

He will be remembered as a very loving man who was devoted to God and supportive to those who were in need.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Stoughton United Methodist Church, 525 Lincoln Ave., Stoughton, Wis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Wisconsin Foundation, in care of Professor Stanley Witzel Memorial Fund, 1848 University Ave., Madison, WI 53705.

RUDD - Graveside services for Stanley A. Witzel Sr., 95, formerly of Rudd, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Rudd Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating.

Stanley A. Witzel Sr. died Dec. 20, 1999 at his residence in Oceanside, Calif.
