John B. McDevitt, 93, of Charles City, formerly of Keokuk, died Thursday, November 18, 2010, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.

Funeral services for John McDevitt will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk.

The family will greet friends after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

John Baldwin McDevitt was born September 17, 1917, in Keokuk, the son of Daniel and Susan (Baldwin) McDevitt. He graduated from the Keokuk High School. On August 18, 1940, he was united in marriage to Marcine Dupy, in Keokuk. From 1944 to 1945, John proudly served in the United States Navy. He was employed as a railroad switchman for the Chicago Burlington Quincy/Burlington Northern Railroad for 38 years. His interests included playing softball, watching trains, riding Mike’s train, watching TV and going on car rides, especially to the Mississippi River.

Living family members include his three children, Michael (Jane) McDevitt of Coatesville, Pa., Marcia (Richard) Olesen of Charles City and Cathy (Bob) Guess of Amarillo, Texas; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two granddaughters, Debbie and Diana Guess; and three brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Honor Flight.
