Death: November 16, 2010

Dr. Edward E. “Ed” Schmiedel, 80, of Charles City, died Tuesday morning, November 16, 2010, at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dr. Ed Schmiedel will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Charles City. Pastor Forrest Cornelius will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 12:30 p.m. at the church on Saturday.

Edward Earl Schmiedel was born February 20, 1930, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of G.O. and Harriet (Updegraf) Schmiedel. He attended Marshalltown High School. After attending junior college, he transferred to the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in medicine in 1955. From there, he completed his residency at Fresno County Hospital in California before serving as a physician in the U.S. Army at the Pueblo Ordinance Depot in Colorado. In 1958, he began his medical practice in Charles City and served the community until 1993, making house calls up to the day he retired. Dr. Schmiedel was Floyd County’s Coroner for over two decades. He also served as President of both Floyd County Medical Association and the YMCA Board. He was also a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and a Trustee of the Congregational Church. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, hunter and fisherman. Ed and Jean traveled the world with Medi-Clinics and he enjoyed his annual fishing trips to the Canadian wilderness. His compassion will be always missed.

Living family members include his wife, Jean Schmiedel of Charles City; three children, Barbara Jean (RJ) Ley of Brookfield, Wisconsin; Edward Andrew Schmiedel of Minneapolis, Minn. and James Weems (Darcie) Schmiedel of Charles City; five grandchildren, Nathan and Daniel Ley, Makenna, Emma and Nolan Weems Schmiedel; two brothers, Gilbert (Arlene) Schmiedel of Davenport and Robert (Sharon) Schmiedel of Cedar Rapids; and a nephew, Daniel Schmiedel of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
