Cynthia J. Kern, 53, of Charles City, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City after a valiant struggle with cancer.

Memorial services for Cynthia Kern will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church. Pastor Tim Robbins will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service.

Cynthia Jane Smith Kern was born May 15, 1957, at Waterloo, the daughter of Eual and Clara (Taylor) Smith McFarland. She attended school in Waterloo and later received her GED. On April 4, 1983, she was united in marriage to Tom Kern. Cynthia was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking and caring for various animals over the years. Cynthia will always be remembered for her loving and caring spirit.

Living family members include her son, Aaron Kern of Osage; three brothers, Ricky (Kathy) McFarland of Waterloo, Bob (Gina) McFarland of Charles City and Timothy McFarland of Waterloo; a sister, Ruth (Dan Huffman) Ungs of Charles City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a sister, Euala Smith.
