On Jan. 25, 1942, Fred was inducted into the United States Army. He served his country as a Technician Fifth Grade and was also involved in arranging the entertainment on the base. Fred's duty ended on October 6, 1945, due to demobilization of troops. He returned home to later be united in marriage to Lou Ellen Teeter in Minnesota.

After finishing all of his other activities, Fred would spend the rest of his time reading.
