CHARLES CITY, IOWA - Harold R. Milhan, 76, of the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, and formerly of 1311 "D" St., Charles City, died Friday (March 5, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City, following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert Streets, Charles City. The Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City, with graveside military honors conducted by the Charles City Memorial Unit.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The family will be present to greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday morning.

Harold Raymond Milhan was born Feb. 6, 1923, in Riceville, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Agnes (Bunston) Milhan. He graduated from Riceville High School. Mr. Milhan enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. He faithfully served his country during World War II as a sergeant serving with the Corps of Engineers attached to the First Infantry. In his service, he was a heavy equipment operator seeing action at Normandy. He was honorably discharged in 1948. On Oct. 16, 1946, in Elma, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Berneta Krumm. Berneta passed away on June 5, 1986, in Charles City. On Nov. 28, 1987, in Charles City, he was united in marriage to Bonita Ann "Bonnie" Jorgensen Webster.

For 32 years, Harold was an assembler at the former Oliver/White Farm Tractor Factory. During his tenure at White Farm, Harold was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local #1315, serving as Chief Union Steward. While his sons were growing up, he served as a Cub Scout Master and a little league coach. He was one of the founding members of the Family Credit Union of Charles City, serving on the Board of Directors for many years. Harold was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church where he had often served as an usher. He belonged to the VFW Post #3914 and the American Legion Shannon Wilson Post #174, both of Charles City. Harold loved to fish, and was especially fond of trout fishing. He rooted for the Chicago Cubs as one of their most avid fans. Harold could often be found in his workshop, as he loved woodworking. Much of his time was devoted to his family.

Living family members include his wife, Bonnie, of Charles City; two sons and their wives, Gene and Judy Milhan of Chapin, S.C., and Allan and Colleen Milhan of Harrah, Okla.; three step-children and their spouses, John and Sue Welter of Dubuque, Theresa and Calvin Scholle of Ackley, Iowa, and Lori and David Roths of Humboldt, Iowa; a brother, Ralph Milhan of Sioux City, Iowa; four sisters, Leona Arndt and husband, Carl, of Charles City, Esther Schoger and husband, Marvin, of Riceville, Anna Mae Marvin and husband, Keith, of Charles City, and Mrs. Mary Lou Carnicle of Edgewood, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in by his parents, and first wife.
