Donald J. Monaghan, 84, of Ionia died Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospital & Clinic in Iowa City as the result of a tractor accident.

A funeral Mass for Donald Monaghan will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Carl Ries will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Donald James Monaghan was born December 29, 1925, at Waverly, the son of Thomas and Roselinda (Baker) Monaghan. He graduated from the Colwell School. Donald proudly served in the United States Marines during World War II. For a time he worked at Rath Packing Company and John Deere in Waterloo and then farmed in the Colwell area the rest of his life. Donald was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Alta Vista V.F.W. His interests included fishing, playing cards, farming, visiting with friends, and watching the Minnesota Vikings, Iowa Hawkeye’s and Chicago Cubs. Donald always looked forward to the time he could spend with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Living family members include two sons, Gary (Cheri) Monaghan of Grundy Center and Ron (Debbie) Monaghan of Hampton; 5 grandchildren, Demi, Jason (Wendy), Jubal and Jacob (Amanda) Monaghan and Josh (Amber) Moen; six great grandchildren, Brooke, Cody, Shirley-Paige and Katelyn Monaghan, Lilly Moen and Jesse Miller; four brothers, Bernard (Betty) Monaghan of Rancho Cordoba, Calif., Gerald (Pernella) Monaghan, Ray Monaghan and Jim (Jennifer) Monaghan all of Waverly, three sisters, Shirley (Jerry) Langham of Minneapolis, Minn., Rosie (Ed) Bahlmann of Waverly and Carol Landers of Greene; a sister-in-law, Dana Monaghan of Humbolt; and a brother-in-law, Gaylord Rogers of Austin, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife on October 27, 2001; an infant daughter, Sherry Monaghan; a brother, Ralph Monaghan; and a sister, Donna Rogers.
