MASON CITY, IOWA - Larry Gelner, Sr., 81, of Charles City, Iowa, died Monday, October 4, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass for Larry Gelner will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. followed by the reciting of the Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus.

Visitation will continue Thursday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Larry Keith Gelner, Sr. was born on September 10, 1929, in Mason City, the son of Victor and Agnes (Roach) Gelner. He attended school in Hancock County and at Forest City. Larry proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. For 31 years he worked at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company and also for several years at the Colwell Co-op. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Larry enjoyed junking, gambling, playing cards, hobby farming, collecting John Deere tractors and attending his Navy reunion. Larry always looked forward to spending time with his family and sharing in their many activities.

Living family members include his wife, Donna Gelner of Charles City; five children, Larry (Barb) Gelner, Jr. of Charles City, Valerie (Bill) Biwer of Charles City, Alan (Sarah) Gelner of Story City, Jeffrey (Carol) Gelner of Charles City and Scott (Eloise) Gelner of Afton, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Joel (Jaime) Gelner, Todd (Jeanne) Gelner, Laurie (Joe) Nichols, Leah Gelner, Jody (Darin) Osier, Jill Biwer, Roy Biwer, Annie (Craig) Fink, Chris (Meg) Gelner, Chad (Jill) Gelner, Katie (Justin) Hanson and Christina Gelner; 20 great grandchildren, Gage and Trevor Gelner, Aiden and Grace Gelner, Emma and Elyse Nichols, Kaleb, Layne and Koryn Osier, Ryder and Cullen Biwer, Kalie, Colton, Samuel and Hudson Fink, Noah and Benjamin Gelner, Luke and Hannah Gelner and Joel Hanson; two brothers, Robert (Remelda) Gelner of Rudd and Vance (Mavis) Gelner of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Janice (Duane) Colby of Lake Mills.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sue Ellen, in infancy; two brothers, Tommy Joe and Charles Edward in infancy.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
