CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Funeral services for Jennie Leota Rex, 85, of 7 Cedar Terrace S., Charles City, formerly of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, and the Rev. Rosemary Rhode-Frank officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, in Marble Rock. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Wednesday at the church.

Jennie Leota Bailey was born Oct. 31, 1912, in Aureola, Union Township, Floyd County, the daughter of Howard Franklin and Alice Louisa (Voelker) Bailey, and died Monday (Oct. 19, 1998) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

She received her education at the Scott Center and Shultz Country Schools, rural Marble Rock, and later attended Marble Rock High School.

On Nov. 12, 1930, she was united in marriage to Gordon Roderick Rex in Blue Earth, Minn. They made their home in rural Marble Rock, where she was employed by the Marble Rock Locker, which she later owned and operated for several years.

The family moved to Hopkins, Minn., where she was a florist for Kakachs Nursery. Upon their return to Marble Rock, they purchased and operated Rex’s Grocery Store and later owned Rex’s Cafe, which she operated from 1970 to 1976.

Gordon and Leota moved to the Cedar Terrace Apartments in Charles City in 1980. She entered the nursing home on April 10, 1992.

She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Loyal Order of the Moose, and a former member of Wa Tan Ye Club in Charles City. She was a former member of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church and presently a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Those left to cherish her memory include four daughters, Kathleen and her husband, Melvin Schilling, of Charles City; Francys and her husband, Don Ritter, of Mason City; Donna Kolbet, of Charles City; and Connie and her husband, Jerome Pitz, of Walworth, Wis.; one son, James and his wife, Betty Rex, of Marble Rock; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenneth Harry Bailey, of Donahue.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 8, 1985; two grandchildren, Charles Ritter and Jimmy Ritter; her parents; two brothers, Leon Bailey and Bill Bailey; and one sister, Alice Hennings.
