Clarence “Rip” Collins, Jr., 87, long-time resident of Des Moines, Iowa, passed peacefully on August 1, 2010 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Graveside services for Clarence Collins, Jr. will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd. Pastor Martha Bennett of Grace United Methodist Church will officiate. Military Honors will be presented by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Clarence Collins, Jr. was born in 1922, at Le Blanc, Louisiana, the son of Clarence and Frances Collins. Clarence was a Navy WW II veteran, having served at Terminal Island, San Pedro, CA and sea duty in the Pacific on the USS Argonne and USS Core. He met and married his wife of 52 years, Betty Busch, a Navy WAVE, in San Pedro, CA in 1945. Clarence was retired from the Des Moines Register where he worked nights as a printer. He was a long-time member of Staves Memorial United Methodist Church in Des Moines, IA. He moved to Scottsdale in 2004 to live with his son.

Clarence is survived by his son, Nolan Collins (Marcia), Scottsdale, AZ; four grandchildren, Michael Collins (Allison), Los Alamos, NM, Patrick Collins, Gilbert, AZ, Bridget Wallace (Scott), Des Moines, IA, and Adam Collins, Bellevue, WA; and six great-grandchildren, Sheridan, Brody, Maya, and Gavin Collins and Jackson and Genevieve Wallace. Clarence will be missed by his daughter-in-law’s children, Elizabeth Ralston (John) and grandson, Devin, Arroyo Grande, CA and Walter Sims, Manhattan Beach, CA; and by Betty’s family, including her sisters, Joan Michael, St. Ansgar, Iowa and Joybelle Perry, Charles City, Iowa.

Clarence was pre-deceased by his parents; his wife; his brothers, Claude and Thadd; and his sisters, Thelma, Alta and Lola.

In lieu of flowers, please make remembrances to the Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Madison Ave., Des Moines, IA 50317.
